How to Show Up When People Search 'Near Me'
Here’s a scene playing out all over the country right now.
John’s dog grooming business has served the same neighbourhood for nearly twenty years. He knows every regular by name and built his reputation on word of mouth. Lately, though, fewer new customers are calling or walking through the door.
Meanwhile, his competitors are thriving. They’re booking more than ever. Even the one ten miles out of town.
The reason is simple. John gives a great service, but that doesn’t automatically show up online. People nearby were searching for exactly what he offers, and they couldn’t find him. He wasn’t showing up in the “near me” results.
Every day, millions of people search for local businesses with phrases like “pizza near me.” These aren’t browsers. They’re people ready to visit, call, or buy right now. Let’s look at how you can capture those searches.
Get your Google Business Profile right
This is the big one, and it’s free.
Fill in every single section. Your name, address, and phone number (make sure they’re spot on), your opening hours, your categories, and plenty of good photos. Choose the categories that genuinely describe what you do.
Then keep it fresh. Post updates and offers now and again, and keep everything accurate. An active, complete profile is one of the strongest signals you can send.
Use your location naturally on your site
Google needs to know where you are. So mention your area naturally throughout your website: your town or city, nearby neighbourhoods, even local landmarks.
Keep it natural, though, just a few times per page. Don’t cram it in awkwardly. You could even build a page for a specific area, targeting something like “dog groomer in [neighbourhood],” as long as the page is genuinely useful to visitors.
Make sure it works on mobile
Most “near me” searches happen on a phone, often while someone is out and about.
If your website is slow or fiddly on mobile, you’ll lose those people. Make sure it loads quickly, is easy to tap around, shows your contact details clearly, and has click-to-call buttons so people can ring you in one tap.
Build consistent listings
When your business appears on directories, industry sites, and community pages, it builds your local authority with Google.
The key word is consistent. Use exactly the same name, address, and phone number everywhere. If you spot an old listing with the wrong details, fix it. Good places to be listed include local directories, your chamber of commerce, and neighbourhood websites.
Encourage local reviews
Reviews that mention your area or a nearby landmark help prove you’re genuinely local.
So when you ask happy customers for a review, gently encourage them to mention their neighbourhood. Getting involved locally helps too, through events, partnerships, or content about your area. The more you show up in your community, the more reasons you give Google to show you in those “near me” results.
